
Acne treatment
Acne vulgaris is a common condition that affects many people of varying age groups but most commonly adolescents. Today, acne sufferers have the choice of a gentle, natural light treatment to add to or replace traditional medication therapies. The Advanced Fluorescence Technology, or AFT, uses a specialized blue light to treat acne effectively.
Acne vulgaris is a disorder of sebaceous follicles that has multiple factors contributing to its onset. It is associated with both an increase in sebaceous gland activity and insufficient shedding of skin cells plugging the gland's duct and follicle. This becomes an oil-rich medium for bacteria and leads to the formation of pustules and cysts.
The management of acne can be accomplished with several different treatments. At Spectrum Laser Aesthetics we use impulse light therapy to target the acne. The red inflammation of acne creates a target for the light emitted. Using light and heat therapy, bacteria is destroyed, an increase in circulation is drawn to the affected area, and sebaceous gland activity is decreased.
This form of light therapy can be done on its own or in conjunction with Levulan™ to provide a more aggressive treatment for those with severe acne. Most treatments are pain-free and fast with patients describing a minimal of discomfort.
It is recommended that treatments take place twice a week for approximately four to six weeks.
Most people can be treated with AFT for acne although there are a few special exceptions. Individuals who are photosensitive or who are on photosensitizing medications should not undergo treatment. As well, people who have been on Accutane™ need to be off the medication for six months prior to AFT treatment. Pregnant women should wait until after delivery.
Side effects are rare but include hypo/hyper-pigmentation, redness, blistering or very rarely scarring. Sun exposure affects the rate of these complications and the chances of side effects are minimized by following treatment guidelines. Exposure should be avoided four weeks prior to and following treatments.
Advances in this technology allow effective treatment to target areas of the skin with little or no damage to the surrounding areas.
